If you simply want to buy Cosequin for your horse at a low price check out the link at the right. There are a range of pack sizes and types of this glucosamine supplement available at discount prices online.

We will introduce you to exactly what this product is, the different products in the range, and how each can help.

We will also have a look at why these sort of products are needed in the first place, and what other methods of helping retain skeletal fitness you can employ.

What is Cosequin?

I guess to get started it would help if we all knew what Cosequin actually is! First up this is not some cheap supplement where you don't know what you're getting (one of the primary problems with such non-regulated feed supplements). Cosequin is manufactured by Nutramax Laboratories. These guys produce a range of products for both humans and animals. By putting a lot of research into finding the right combination of amounts of active ingredients and importantly ensuring they are readily "bio-available", they make sure there is actually a real benefit to using their range over others on the market.

Equine Cosequin Ingredients

There are several versions of the equine cosequin product. All start off with the same base and then include various additional ingredients, or volumes to suit differing needs of animals with various activity levels.

The key ingredients are

  • FCHG49® glucosamine
  • TRH122® sodium chondroitin sulfate.
These two compounds work to improve joint health.  They provide the building blocks of cartilage so improving its condition and thus prolonging good mobility.  In addition it is believed these products reduce the activity of enzymes that are themselves causing the breakdown of cartilage.  So the results are thought to mean that joint health is improved on two fronts.

Both these ingredients are widely used in human supplements taken by patients experiencing joint problems caused by osteo-arthritis.  Work is still needed to clarify exactly how well they can improve mobility and joint pain, but much evidence and patient feedback does indicate that in many cases improvement can be dramatic.

If you suspect that your horse is experiencing joint pain that may be a result of cartilage breakdown (due to arthritis, simple wear and tear or due to accidental damage), the first port of call should be your vet.  They will be able to determine whether Cosequin could really help.

Types of Equine Cosequin

There are four varieties of Cosequin available for horses:

Standard Cosequine Equine

This is the original formula from Nutramax Laboratories. This is most widely used as a joint conditioner for horses given ordinary light exercise, such as young animals or those used primarily at weekends.

Cosequin Optimised Equine

This is a simple improved version of the original formula. The active ingredients are in a more highly concentrated form, meaning less is needed to provide more benefit. This is usually recommended for animals that are given more moderate regular exercise.

Optimised Cosequin with MSM

This version offers the same higher levels of active ingredients as the simple optimised powder. However another ingredient; MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). This compound is believed to relieve pressure in cells, reducing pain and inflammation. In addition as a natural compound found in healthy connective tissue it is believed that a supplement will help improve cartilage and overall joint condition further. This is the product recommended for particularly active horses.

Equine Cosequin ASU

This is the newest product in the Nutramax Cosequin range and is recommended for particularly busy work horses such as racing and eventing animals. This is basically optimised Cosequin with MSM and ASU (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables). This additional compound has been found to improve the ability of the first ingredients to help improve joint health.

If you have not used any of the Cosequin range before the level of exercise your animal receives, along with the extent of the problem and your vet's advice should help you determine which product to use. If you are seeing good results with the basic formula there is no need to upgrade to a newer one simply because it becomes available.

When Cosequin Equine Can Help

Your horse's mobility is all based upon the cartilage and sinovial fluid that keep the joints working smoothly. As these break down the joints can jar without the proper shock absorption, causing pain and inflammation.

The problem may be caused by osteo-arthritis, injury or simple wear and tear due to the strain placed on joints naturally during an active life.

Most horse owners will notice any change in gait, stiffness or lameness pretty early on.  The sooner the issue is dealt with the better, for the long tern condition of the animal.

So if you suspect such problems ask your vet if Cosequin Equine may help.

Cosequin for Pets

In addition to providing products to help horses and humans, Nutramax offer a range of cosequin based products to help our pets.

Cosequin for Dogs and Cosequin for Cats are both widely suggested by vets as a way to control joint problems and improve mobility.

Whilst nothing will cure arthritis, maintaining joint health for as long as possible will maintain movement and reduce the need to move onto more potentially dangerous medicines in the future.

Helping Animals With Joint Problems and Arthritis

In addition to supplements, regular light exercise, shedding excess weight and massage can all help improve the condition of animals experiencing joint pain and inflammation.

Simply spending time with your animal, relaxing them and yourself, talking and petting them can all go a long way to making their life more enjoyable and lessen the aches and pains of growing older.

Cosequin Equine powder can go a long way to improving their condition too.
